SUMMIT LITHIUM RUNTIMES

Understanding the BMS (Battery Management System)

Every Summit Lithium battery includes a built-in Battery Management System. The BMS is responsible for:

  • Protecting the battery from unsafe conditions

  • Ensuring stable 14.8V output for clean sonar performance

  • Maintaining cell health and extending battery life

Each model’s BMS is calibrated for its intended application. Drawing more current than the battery is rated for can trigger the BMS to shut the battery down to protect itself.

Choosing the Right Battery Size

Lithium batteries provide more usable capacity than traditional lead acid options, but sizing correctly still matters.

Best practices:

  • Charge before every outing

  • You do not need to drain the battery before recharging

  • Consider sizing up if you run large screens or multiple devices

  • Larger capacities experience less stress and deliver more overall cycles

Summit Lithium batteries typically offer 95–100% usable capacity, far higher than SLA batteries (50–80%).

Capacity, Voltage & Runtime

Lithium voltage remains stable throughout most of the discharge cycle. This means:

  • Consistent screen brightness

  • Cleaner forward-facing sonar returns

  • More reliable all-day performance

Mounting & Installation

Proper installation has a major impact on long-term performance.

Guidelines:

  • Secure the battery in a tray, box, or shuttle

  • Keep it protected from direct water exposure

  • Mount in any orientation, as long as it’s supported

  • Inspect wiring periodically

  • Apply dielectric grease to terminal connections to prevent corrosion

The most common cause of premature battery failure is improper installation or moisture exposure — not the battery itself.

Storage Recommendations

Store your Summit Lithium battery in a:

  • Dry location

  • Temperature range of 40–80°F

  • Partially charged state (30–60%)

Avoid:

  • Storing the battery fully discharged

  • Storing the battery at 100% for long periods

  • Leaving it unused for months without a maintenance charge

If storing long-term, give it a short charge every 60–90 days.

Using Batteries in Series (12V → 24V → 36V)

When possible, use a battery that matches the voltage you need. If running batteries in series:

  • Only wire together identical batteries

  • Each battery must have its own charger

  • Do not mix capacities, ages, or brands

Most forward-facing sonar setups run best on a single Summit Lithium 14.8V battery.

Charging Your Summit Lithium Battery

NMC lithium batteries require the correct charging profile to stay healthy.

Important rules:

  • Do not charge the battery below 32°F

  • Use only the Summit Lithium 16.8V charger included with your battery

  • Avoid “desulfate” mode chargers

  • Charge indoors or with an IP-rated marine charger

  • Do not expose the charger or battery to water while charging

Proper charging is one of the most important factors in long-term battery performance.

Routine Connection Checks

Even though lithium requires little maintenance, your connections still do.

  • Ensure terminal bolts stay tight

  • Look for corrosion or moisture

  • Reapply dielectric grease as needed

  • Inspect wiring after rough travel or heavy use

Loose or corroded connections can cause resistance and heat buildup.

Long-Term Performance & Life Expectancy

With proper care, Summit Lithium batteries are designed to last 5–10 years under regular use.

Treat the battery like an important part of your electronics system — install it correctly, charge it correctly, and store it correctly — and it will reward you with stable power and long service life.
